00:00:11

Welcome back to the Talking Cars podcast.

00:00:13

I'm Alex Isaac.

00:00:14

I'm Emily Thomas and I'm Keith Barry.

00:00:16

All right so on today's show we're going
to be talking about the 2026 Lexus ES.

00:00:21

And I don't think there is a more,

00:00:24

Consumer Reports vehicle
or very few than the Lexus ES.

00:00:28

So this is an important car.

00:00:29

It's historically done

00:00:30

really well in our testing,
in kind of a perennial favorite for us.

00:00:34

So it's a big deal
when a new one comes along.

00:00:36

Today, we'll be talking specifically

00:00:37

about the electric version of the EV,
which is a new thing for the s in general.

00:00:41

But what we bought is a, s 500 E,

00:00:44

so that kind of stands for the all wheel
drive version of the electric.

00:00:48

You can also get a front wheel drive,
which we'll get into.

00:00:51

Got the convenience package.

00:00:52

And in the end
it came to about $54 with destination,

00:00:57

which is certainly not cheap,
but kind of in line with what

00:01:00

you might expect for a vehicle like this.

00:01:02

So let's get into it.

00:01:03

Keith, I'm going to start with you
because like I said,

00:01:05

this is historically been a great car.

00:01:07

Highly recommended by KR.

00:01:09

Reliable owners.

00:01:10

Love it. Road test pretty well.

00:01:12

But you said leading up to this
that you kind of had to,

00:01:16

come to terms with it, so to speak.

00:01:17

So what did you have to come to
that was so nervous about this car.

00:01:20

So I wrote the preview of it,
and then I started seeing photos of it.

00:01:24

And then I would see 1 or 2 on the road,
and I and I and I, I so you hit a certain

00:01:28

age and suddenly things start kind of the,
the world isn't for you anymore.

00:01:33

And it just there's
this South Park episode about this.

00:01:35

Oh there is.

00:01:36

Oh, I just see I'm too old for that.

00:01:38

I don't know, he's hit a certain he
I thought that age and now, you know

00:01:42

like it's

00:01:43

you go to a restaurant,
the music's too loud

00:01:44

and everyone says welcome in instead of
just hello, I'm with you on that one.

00:01:47

Yeah. And it's there's nothing wrong
with it. It's just sort of like.

00:01:50

Oh, okay.

00:01:51

I just it's time for me to fade
into the background slowly.

00:01:55

And, and I was afraid that Lexus had sort
of, you know, from the look of it,

00:01:59

they're very obviously chasing the,
you know, the model three.

00:02:03

They're very obviously, you know,
they've changed out all the chrome for.

00:02:06

Yeah, it was kind of traditional looking.

00:02:08

And now it is not exactly, exactly.

00:02:11

And the EV part I don't mind at all.

00:02:12

I love the fact that you know,
this car is, is, you know, a Lexus.

00:02:15

It's a, it's it's a quiet, comfy car
and it is made to be an EV or a hybrid.

00:02:20

The quieter better.

00:02:22

So that I was actually
I was excited about.

00:02:24

But just looking at it,
it looked a little minimalist.

00:02:27

I was really nervous.

00:02:28

It was like, you know,

00:02:30

the the menu changes
at your favorite restaurant and then and

00:02:33

then the booth changed to tables
and then the lights changed to it just

00:02:37

it felt like it was getting,
something good was going to change, right?

00:02:41

Right. So I was nervous.

00:02:43

Don't mess with you know,
what's not broken, essentially.

00:02:45

Right.
It was already doing really well. So.

00:02:47

And there aren't that many luxuries.

00:02:49

I mean, we already lost the LS, which was
big and expensive and kind of fussy.

00:02:54

You know, there aren't
that many luxury sedans out there,

00:02:57

and the ones that exist
are mostly tuned for performance, right?

00:03:00

Not for kind of comfort
and pushiness. Right.

00:03:03

So I love this car.

00:03:06

I, I know when we had the last one

00:03:08

we had in the fleet,
it was signed out every long weekend.

00:03:11

The one time I saw Jeff Bartlett
take a vacation, he had it out

00:03:16

for his road trip.

00:03:17

So yeah, exactly.

00:03:19

It was the car that like

00:03:20

like we put it like, please
don't put any more miles on this car.

00:03:23

You know, warning on it, on it. So yeah.

00:03:26

Yeah, I was I was not popular.

00:03:27

Yeah. Very popular, very popular.

00:03:30

Emily,
were you nervous getting into this car?

00:03:33

I'm here to, either previous. Yes.

00:03:35

As or just, you know, in general
going into this. This.

00:03:37

Yes. For the first time, I think at first
when I found out that it was an EV,

00:03:41

I was like, oh, shucks, because I was
more nervous about the range.

00:03:46

Yeah. And okay.

00:03:47

Oh yeah. Especially a Toyota.

00:03:48

Yeah. They're not
they're not pushing the boundaries on.

00:03:51

Yeah.
So when I had to have it, you know what?

00:03:53

We were

00:03:54

going to be having a lot of long drives
because we were going down to our church.

00:03:58

That's like an hour away.

00:04:00

And so I was like, man,
I'm going to have to charge it this week.

00:04:03

Yeah,
I had to deal with this and like, yeah.

00:04:06

So I definitely get range anxiety.

00:04:08

So that part I wasn't excited about.

00:04:11

So range anxiety and regular anxiety.

00:04:14

Yeah. Okay.

00:04:15

The combine.

00:04:15

Yeah. The combine. It's just
the car is not going for that.

00:04:18

That's not the right.

00:04:19

No, but I will say that
I was pleasantly surprised.

00:04:23

Yeah, right.

00:04:24

He enjoyed the car a lot.

00:04:27

All right. And,
it's quite the endorsement.

00:04:29

Yeah I, I'm in that camp too,
so I guess I'll say that now.

00:04:34

Yes. Yeah. Put your votes in now.

00:04:38

So, yeah, we had it.

00:04:39

We did a lot of driving in it.

00:04:41

I found it really comfortable.

00:04:44

I loved how quiet it was,
like exceptionally quiet.

00:04:48

It's so quiet.

00:04:50

It's. The thing that struck me right away
is especially.

00:04:52

I mean, this is what, you know, you want
an EV to be like or any car to be like.

00:04:57

To be frank. Yeah.

00:04:58

But it's it's like taking full advantage
of the fact that it's the powertrain

00:05:01

is essentially silent.
And then it's just quiet on top of that.

00:05:04

And it's, it's so great for it.

00:05:06

I kept driving like faster and faster
to try

00:05:09

and see if I could get the wind noise
in, you know, in the house.

00:05:12

I'm, I'm doing 67,
but no, but yeah, the track.

00:05:16

Exactly.

00:05:17

No, but every, every time
I get on the highway, I think all right.

00:05:19

This is when it's going to be okay.

00:05:21

This is how it's going to end. Like it
doesn't.

00:05:23

The suspension is like this.

00:05:25

Like distant rolling thunder somewhere.

00:05:27

Like it's almost like calming.

00:05:28

It's one of those cars where you you're
driving for a while, right.

00:05:31

And and windows up or whatever.

00:05:33

You crack that window
for the first time in.

00:05:35

Let's say 30 minutes and you're like,
oh my God, it's so loud.

00:05:38

Yeah.

00:05:38

Like it's just the differential between
how quiet it is

00:05:41

in the car with everything closed up,
and then you open the window

00:05:43

and it's you kind of struck by
how loud it is.

00:05:45

So it speaks how quiet it is
when everything's closed. Right. Yeah.

00:05:48

I think I was telling Maddie that like,
that makes it feel luxurious to me.

00:05:53

It's not like 100%
where it's just so quiet and refined,

00:05:58

and the ride itself
just felt so, like, effortless.

00:06:01

Like the driving. Yeah.

00:06:02

So I was like,
I barely feel like I'm driving.

00:06:05

Not because I'm like using
all the driver assistance, but just,

00:06:09

I don't know, it's just very enjoyable.
Yeah. Yeah.

00:06:11

I think yes.

00:06:13

Like the anxiety is, is valid. Right.

00:06:16

There are other aspects of this car
that are a lot different than maybe

00:06:19

previous S's. Right.

00:06:20

But I was happy to see that they stuck
to those kind of core things that make a

00:06:25

this car good and then just a luxurious
experience in general quietness

00:06:28

and then pretty exceptional ride quality,
which is not a given these days.

00:06:32

Right. And the fit and finish too.

00:06:33

I noticed it still has the Lexus thing
where you put up the, the, the window

00:06:38

and it just slows.

00:06:39

Yeah, up
and makes kind of a little details noise.

00:06:42

Right? Right. Yeah.

00:06:43

It's like a soft closed drawer cabinet.

00:06:45

It feels I mean it feels like
it feels still luxurious.

00:06:49

It feels like and this is you know again
you look at some other EVs out there.

00:06:54

Model three.

00:06:55

And you know it's it's
not the build quality.

00:06:58

The silence and the suspension

00:07:00

are the three things
that I would knock against it.

00:07:03

Yeah. Right.

00:07:04

So compared to this it's a it's a it's
a huge, huge difference.

00:07:08

Right. The more time I spent with it
the more that I found.

00:07:10

So first of all, we also borrowed
one from.

00:07:13

Yes that's right.

00:07:13

We borrowed one.

00:07:14

That was the I, was it
the premium or luxury?

00:07:17

What do they call it?

00:07:18

The higher
it was, the higher of the two. Yeah.

00:07:21

The luxury. Correct.
And it was front wheel drive.

00:07:23

So it was a bit of a different experience
than the one we have.

00:07:26

But the interior had that like bamboo.

00:07:28

Yeah. Really cool thing.

00:07:29

And that and the backlighting.

00:07:30

And I thought oh this looks really nice.

00:07:32

And then I got into ours and the color,
it was kind of it was a bit monochromatic.

00:07:38

But y very basic.

00:07:40

Yeah, very beige
and a little gray and some.

00:07:43

But then I actually
you were the one who told me

00:07:45

you were like, look at the actual
materials and the actual materials.

00:07:49

And I got and I looked and and there's,
you know, there's interesting quilting,

00:07:54

there's some soft touch surfaces,
there's that micro suede.

00:07:57

And it is interesting and I think

00:08:01

the time I spent in the car, you know,
so I did the first drive on it.

00:08:04

Then I shot a video on it.
So I, I've spent a lot of time in it.

00:08:06

And every time I got in the car,

00:08:08

in this car I like I, I agree with I, it
grew on me more and more and more.

00:08:11

Okay. Yeah.

00:08:12

Yeah so I can't I mean first of all
I can't wait for the hybrid version.

00:08:15

Yeah I know right.

00:08:16

But there is one
well handle my range anxiety.

00:08:19

Yeah for sure. Exactly.

00:08:20

But this is what an EV is supposed to be.

00:08:23

This is what a luxury EV
is supposed to be.

00:08:26

I think

00:08:26

even that monochromatic ness though
kind of adds to the calming effect though.

00:08:30

Like it it's very like neutral tones.

00:08:33

It's it's just a calming
sort of environment and just adds to that.

00:08:37

So I mean it's not great if you have kids
with all those white color.

00:08:41

Yeah, I can show everything, but
I don't know I it, I thought it was them.

00:08:46

Yeah, yeah, yeah,

00:08:47

I just wanted I thought it was just
a really nice package all together.

00:08:50

Right. Yeah.

00:08:50

And I think, I don't know, it's
a smaller detail, I suppose,

00:08:54

but the thing that stood out to me
is, is what you said, the microfiber,

00:08:57

like the way the gauge display
is kind of set into the dash and it's like

00:09:01

cut out a little bit and then you have
that microfiber kind of insert there.

00:09:04

I don't know, it's unique.
I haven't really seen that before.

00:09:06

So I thought it was kind of interesting
to look at and, and use,

00:09:09

I think in the winter time
because we also got it's not called

00:09:12

it's called that the cold,
the cold, cold weather package.

00:09:15

Yeah, yeah.

00:09:15

And it was so we got that as,
as most of the cars that are sent up here.

00:09:19

So when we bought it anonymously,
we buy what's on the dealer lot.

00:09:22

And cars that get sent to Connecticut
always have the cold weather package.

00:09:25

Yeah.

00:09:25

This one had something really interesting.

00:09:27

It has radiant heating. That.

00:09:29

Great. Right.

00:09:30

From from your love for your knees.

00:09:32

Yeah. Cooler box.

00:09:33

And then kind of under the steering
column, trim essentially

00:09:36

I think that's going
to be really interesting

00:09:38

to make it really popular
this fall and winter.

00:09:41

Yeah. And that's the reason that yes,
it's going to be popular here.

00:09:43

Yeah. It's all of our our extra heating.

00:09:47

Yeah.

00:09:47

We need the

00:09:48

heated steering wheel on the seats
and yeah all that that good stuff.

00:09:51

Yeah.

00:09:52

They have that on the RC
as the first kind of car

00:09:56

to have that radiant heating,
but it wasn't very effective.

00:09:59

I don't know when I tried it here.

00:10:00

Granted, it's not as cold as it was
then when I tried on the RC, but

00:10:04

it just seems to put off more heat,
so maybe they're kind of

00:10:06

improving it over time.

00:10:07

And the idea is
so that you're using more of that

00:10:10

and less of the actual traditional
kind of heating system,

00:10:12

which takes from your battery charge
range, your efficiency, all that stuff.

00:10:16

So and yeah, and the climate
controls themselves, they were kind of

00:10:20

they were kind of interesting.
Yeah, a little weird.

00:10:22

They didn't look like buttons, but
they were, they were, they were buttons.

00:10:24

Yeah. Yeah.

00:10:25

They like wanted to follow the trend
where everything's touch capacitive

00:10:28

and in the screen.
But then they didn't go all the way.

00:10:30

So it's like a rubber membrane thing
that you actually press on too.

00:10:34

Yeah. It's kind of I tried it first.

00:10:36

I just like covered on it
and nothing happens.

00:10:38

I was like, oh, okay,
I guess I yeah, which they gave me.

00:10:40

Okay. Now you don't have to just press
a finger on it.

00:10:43

Exactly. Press the button. Right.

00:10:45

But it does feel like
every new car is a game.

00:10:48

Of which is it?

00:10:49

Is it touch? Is it.

00:10:51

Yeah. You can't go into it expecting.

00:10:53

Just do I swipe it?

00:10:55

Cars are escape rooms now. Yeah. Yes.

00:10:57

And we'll get we'll get to that.

00:10:58

Sometimes they really are because I can't
figure out how to open the doors back up.

00:11:03

And this does have the Lexus doors. Yeah.

00:11:05

It has unfortunately those annoying
Lexus doors that we've talked about

00:11:08

with almost every other vehicle.
Yeah. Push button.

00:11:11

You got it right.

00:11:11

Yeah.

00:11:12

And explain to your passengers
how to get out.

00:11:15

I guess you're going to try to pull on it
and and you have to pull it real

00:11:18

and you have to press it and open it
real quick in one motion.

00:11:21

Otherwise it'll get stuck. Yeah, right.

00:11:23

You have to press it twice
and then you have to.

00:11:25

Yeah, yeah.

00:11:25

So yeah I would imagine
that these door handles also.

00:11:28

But and then the controls
are part of the anxiety.

00:11:31

Right. Yes.

00:11:32

Exactly. Exactly.

00:11:33

Although I mean I think,

00:11:35

I think the perfect S was the one
that got rid of that Lexus remote touch.

00:11:39

Yeah. Yeah. That.

00:11:40

Yeah. Basically
that moved to the touch screen. Right.

00:11:42

But this guy from the last generation
essentially.

00:11:45

Exactly. Yeah. Which is actually my mother
in law has one.

00:11:48

All right.

00:11:48

And just to do to my recommendation, but,
but I see a used car in your future.

00:11:53

Yeah. What should I get? I well,

00:11:56

but, Yeah.

00:11:57

No, the, Yeah, my mom has an Avalon
hybrid, so maybe I'm a creature of habit.

00:12:01

But, yeah, I would say yes.

00:12:04

The,
the the infotainment system much improved.

00:12:08

Much. Oh, yeah.

00:12:09

Yeah,
just like icon software speaking. Right.

00:12:11

Bigger screen but in not in a flashy way.

00:12:14

Yeah.

00:12:15

They added a home I mean Toyota's
kind of been going with this

00:12:18

new infotainment system
for call it a couple years now.

00:12:22

And it first showed up.

00:12:23

And you know some things about it
weren't so great.

00:12:26

It didn't have a home screen.

00:12:26

You kind of always jump in between menus
and they've just kind of built on it

00:12:29

a little bit over time
to make it easier to use.

00:12:32

They're not so worried about, maybe
they copied Tesla in some other ways,

00:12:36

but here things are larger,
easier to see for the most part.

00:12:39

Some smaller controls. But I found it.

00:12:41

Yeah, other than Bluetooth,
which maybe we can get into that.

00:12:43

But yeah. Could you connect your phone?

00:12:45

Oh my goodness.

00:12:46

Every single time I got into the car
I would have to tell it to connect,

00:12:49

even though it was already paired
and all the things.

00:12:52

And it was a very frustrating.

00:12:54

I was in a Toyota that last week as well
and of the same experience.

00:12:58

I'm like, I don't understand
why a car that I have paired my phone to

00:13:02

you must be like convinced
to pair, like to connect again.

00:13:07

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I had to choose it
from the menu every single time.

00:13:10

Yeah.
Which makes it really frustrating because

00:13:14

that's distract me.

00:13:15

Part of the simplicity of it.

00:13:17

It's like, oh, I'm in the car.

00:13:18

My Bluetooth side,
the car automatically connects

00:13:21

and then I get halfway down the road.

00:13:22

I'm like,
I guess not, I guess I know, yes.

00:13:24

I mean, it's it's

00:13:25

inexcusable in the new Rav4
where the same thing essentially happens,

00:13:28

but now you're talking about an E-s,
right? Right.

00:13:30

Yeah. And a Lexus product.
And it's just it's not good.

00:13:33

I mean, yeah, I had the same thing
I iPhone.

00:13:35

I had to enable CarPlay every time.

00:13:37

And then if I didn't use CarPlay

00:13:39

and I was just using Bluetooth,
I couldn't have a phone call.

00:13:41

It's showing my phone is connected
for both audio and phone.

00:13:45

You try to call somebody or they call,
you just can't hear it.

00:13:48

And we have a time disconnect in and out
of these cars and delete there, there.

00:13:52

Yeah, I was the first person in the car,

00:13:54

so it wasn't even like like there
it was because we used them.

00:13:58

They just apparently
are struggling with that.

00:14:00

And there are some reason androids,
there are people who have old iPhones,

00:14:03

new iPhones.

00:14:04

So we have a range of folks getting in.

00:14:06

And Toyota Lexus just can't seem to.

00:14:09

It was BMW for a while.

00:14:10

It was Hyundai for a while it seems.

00:14:13

Yeah, yeah, I don't know.

00:14:14

It seems like it should be table stakes,
but yeah, it doesn't really

00:14:19

lend itself to a luxurious experience
when you're frustrated

00:14:21

just at connecting your phone. Right?

00:14:23

And it can be distracting too,

00:14:24

if you already have started driving
and then realize that it's

00:14:27

something's gone wrong.

00:14:28

Yeah, I know, and I liked it.

00:14:30

Most of the controls,
there were certain aspects of it

00:14:33

where I was like, why can I only access
half of the climate controls here?

00:14:38

And then I have to go into the screen for
the other half of the climate controls.

00:14:41

Yeah, right.

00:14:42

A car at this level.

00:14:45

I also kind of thought

00:14:46

that there should maybe be separate,
like rear climate controls.

00:14:50

They have this the flow thing going on.

00:14:53

And so like
I didn't realize it was set to the flow.

00:14:56

And so the kids weren't
getting any air in the back.

00:14:58

It was so hot. And I was like,
I don't understand.

00:15:00

Do you have your own panel back there?

00:15:02

Like, why is it not turning on?

00:15:03

You should have bought them
the executive pack,

00:15:05

should have bought them the executive
package, the executive children

00:15:10

that I get
around it probably is the most accurate.

00:15:13

Who got to have the the leg rest? Yeah.

00:15:15

The oldest one gets the oldest would get
the leg rest and the youngest would.

00:15:19

Yeah, we'd have it.

00:15:19

Either of you try the leg rest in the.

00:15:22

So in the borrowed one that we had right
that higher trim.

00:15:24

It had this
I think it was called the exact.

00:15:27

Yeah.

00:15:27

Packs the package
and yeah it turns the s into a

00:15:30

from a car you drive to one,
you get driven around in basically.

00:15:33

Right. And that. Right.

00:15:34

The passenger side rear seat
essentially turns into a, recliner

00:15:39

and you get controls.

00:15:40

You also get another thing I noticed
that was missing on a car

00:15:43

that cost this much, which I don't need,

00:15:45

but it's in cars that cost a lot
less is the surround view camera.

00:15:49

You have to upgrade
to get the surround view camera.

00:15:51

You just get, sensors in the front
of an electronics child door lock.

00:15:55

It's not available at 60 Grant
in this car, which I'm like,

00:15:59

I can find that in Ikea sedans.

00:16:03

So yeah, it always is confusing to me.

00:16:07

The number of luxury vehicles.

00:16:08

I don't just have that button there. Yeah.

00:16:11

And I do wonder in this particular case,
what choice is it.

00:16:14

Maybe that's one of them were made
because they're,

00:16:17

you know, an EV
is generally more expensive

00:16:19

to make because of the battery cost,
even though,

00:16:20

yes, it's going down, but it's still not
the same as making a gas or hybrid.

00:16:25

What did they have to leave out
to keep the price at $54?

00:16:28

Right? Surround view camera,
I guess maybe one of them.

00:16:31

And then some of these other things.
And the price goes

00:16:32

and you'll notice the price goes way up
totally when you start.

00:16:36

The one we borrowed was like 66.

00:16:38

Yes, that's a big jump.

00:16:40

But I will say the back seat for

00:16:42

for at least for adult passengers,
that is one of the most no matter

00:16:47

whether you get the executive or not,
that is one of the most comfortable large.

00:16:51

Yeah.

00:16:51

Back seats I can see a lot of these being
used as like an Uber black or, or for,

00:16:56

you know, black car services.

00:16:57

Taxi I mean high end livery services.

00:17:00

Well, they added, if I remember
reading it properly they, they added

00:17:04

quite a bit to the wheelbase. Right. Yeah.

00:17:08

The car is a half inch.
Yeah. It's quite a bit bigger.

00:17:10

That's a good point.
And it's also taller. Right.

00:17:13

And particularly this EV where
you got to sit on a battery pack right.

00:17:16

Yeah.

00:17:17

You look at the car and in isolation
I guess a sedan, then you park

00:17:21

it next to maybe the old s
or something like that

00:17:23

and you're like, oh,
this thing actually is quite a bit taller.

00:17:25

You sit higher.

00:17:26

Kind of reminds me of the crown, right?

00:17:28

The Toyota Crown,
where it's like this weird in between,

00:17:31

kind of car, SUV type thing,
driving position.

00:17:34

So I don't know if you found it to be
a little different in that way to drive,

00:17:38

but I did feel from a driving position
standpoint,

00:17:41

sitting a little higher up
wasn't wasn't a bad thing, right?

00:17:43

Better visibility in the glass area in
this car is quite good.

00:17:46

Yeah. Easy to get in and out of right.
Yeah. Yeah.

00:17:49

All around between the accents,
the comfort.

00:17:51

Like the overall experience.

00:17:54

I think it would be a great car
for like when my parents

00:17:58

retire and they, you know, need something
comfortable to get around in.

00:18:02

I think it would probably be one of the
few EVs my mom would actually consider.

00:18:06

She's really EV. Sure.

00:18:08

Okay. Maybe the hybrid, right?

00:18:10

Yeah. See, when we test that, we'll see.

00:18:12

But like you know, overall
just it's comfortable.

00:18:15

And even though I have the range
anxiety with this car, I was surprised

00:18:20

I was able to do I felt like it handled,

00:18:23

everything very efficiently.

00:18:26

Like I still had
a surprising amount of range left over.

00:18:29

It is an efficient, vehicle, right?

00:18:32

I mean, we talked about the wind noise
early on, and, and you and I talked

00:18:35

about too, about the numbers on paper
don't look that impressive, right.

00:18:40

But when it comes to actual chart,
like it.

00:18:42

No, it can't do
350 kilowatt charging, right.

00:18:45

No it can't.

00:18:47

But when you charge it at home, it's
actually pretty fast.

00:18:50

Yeah, it is competitive at home.

00:18:51

You can plug into a Tesla Supercharger

00:18:53

and put on more miles
than like a BMW or an Audi EV.

00:18:57

It's basically only slower than what?

00:18:59

Like Kia
and Hyundai and Genesis and Tesla.

00:19:02

Yeah, yeah, some of the yeah.

00:19:03

In terms of in the way
we're looking at this as you'll see.

00:19:06

And Lexus is guilty of it too.

00:19:08

A lot of these companies are advertising
basically the rate of charging rate.

00:19:12

You see you'll see 250 kilowatt
or 400 for some of these new EVs.

00:19:15

And this one's 150. Yeah.

00:19:17

So it's lower.

00:19:18

But that's like half
the story is what we tend to say.

00:19:21

Because you're not really
that doesn't tell you

00:19:23

how many miles of range you're getting for
however long you sit on the charger.

00:19:26

Right.

00:19:26

So it's the rate of charging combined
with the efficiency

00:19:29

tells you basically how quickly
you're going to add miles to the car.

00:19:31

So at 150 might be a little lower.

00:19:33

But because the powertrain
is relatively efficient,

00:19:35

you're going to add miles,
relatively quickly.

00:19:38

So it's to your point on paper,
maybe it doesn't look so special.

00:19:41

But it is competitive.

00:19:43

But the range is they're using the same,
actually, presumably,

00:19:47

the same battery pack as,
like the Toyota BZ

00:19:49

and some of these other EVs
that are in the Toyota Lexus family.

00:19:53

So when you compare it to, like,

00:19:55

a, Tesla or something else,
they're definitely not as competitive.

00:19:59

I mean, 270 something miles of range. Yes.

00:20:01

Yeah.

00:20:02

It's just not really pushing the
the envelope at this point.

00:20:05

It did tell me that I could have
more range if I turned off my climate.

00:20:09

Yeah.

00:20:09

And that was right there. Very.

00:20:11

I was like this one.

00:20:13

Yeah, I know that's not realistic.

00:20:15

I will save myself or I'll eat those
extra 20 miles so I can't keep my AC on.

00:20:22

Yeah.

00:20:22

And it's not so much of an issue
around town or if you're charging at home,

00:20:26

but it's those longer trips and,
you know, like you experienced.

00:20:29

So that's
where the hybrid is going to be key.

00:20:32

What about you? You don't have to, do you?

00:20:35

Or if you don't frequently
do like long road trips,

00:20:38

then this could be a good option for you.

00:20:39

Otherwise, maybe wait for the hybrid
or a second car you can have.

00:20:44

And the other thing
you might need a second car

00:20:45

because of the fact
some of the cargo issues.

00:20:48

It has this nice big wide trunk.

00:20:50

But this is a Lexus S thing.

00:20:51

And we asked Toyota, what is this
they don't have?

00:20:55

It's the rear seats don't fold down.
Oh yeah. They were like, it's a choice.

00:20:58

We made a brand promise or some,
you know, corporate e's that they said

00:21:02

to give me less like, yeah, what is the
what I've heard sort of like.

00:21:06

And this is just rumors.

00:21:07

I have no idea but it that it has
something to do with getting the car

00:21:10

to be that quiet
and getting sort of the envy down.

00:21:13

Okay. All right.

00:21:14

That are some bracing
or there's something there behind the seat

00:21:18

that if you had the seats
fold down, it's a, it's a structural

00:21:23

I mean yeah, that that area back
there is a,

00:21:25

you have a better big reason for your,
torsional stiffness in a car.

00:21:29

But in a car like this, I don't think
you're so worried about that.

00:21:32

But, yeah, maybe it does help
with transmitting vibrations.

00:21:35

And if you can make that panel back there
really thick or something.

00:21:38

Right. But they were like,
we don't want to talk about it.

00:21:39

It's like, this is a choice that it's
like all of a sudden it went to like,

00:21:43

you know, defense mode for defense.

00:21:44

Yeah. You're like, this is a choice
we've made and we're sticking to it.

00:21:47

And we're like, okay, okay,
there is a ski pass through.

00:21:50

There is. And then also there's no frunk.

00:21:53

So you are losing out on frunk space
because this is that shared platform

00:21:57

that the hybrid's going to come out with.

00:21:58

And there's going to
there's going to be a gas engine up there.

00:22:01

Yeah. And that's really interesting.

00:22:02

I mean I think that's
a really good thing to be aware of

00:22:05

is that the seats don't fold down
if it does truly enable the quietness.

00:22:08

Personally, I'll take the trade off
because I mean,

00:22:11

but if your parents are buying Ikea
and they're getting a very long flat pack

00:22:15

something. Yeah,
they're great trailer kids.

00:22:17

Yeah, yeah, yeah, you need
another vehicle, but another vehicle.

00:22:20

Yeah.

00:22:20

The, the fact that they're,

00:22:22

they're putting the I'm going to nerd out
for just a second.

00:22:24

The fact that they're putting
the torsional stiffness wasn't the being,

00:22:26

you know, we're just getting started.

00:22:28

No, no, no, the, this is the first time

00:22:31

they're putting an EV
into what they call the Tnga.

00:22:34

Okay.

00:22:35

Like the Camry, right? Awesome.

00:22:36

Oh, I see the Rav4. Right?

00:22:38

They've so far and we don't really know
the full extent of the differences,

00:22:41

but something like the Solterra
and the the BCR

00:22:45

on a dedicated EV platform,
whereas this is technically not.

00:22:49

It's shared.

00:22:49

And a lot of automakers are doing this
right, because especially here in the US,

00:22:52

we can't make up our mind
and what kind of powertrains we want

00:22:55

or what
the future holds. We need options, Alex.

00:22:57

You do. And options are good.
Options are good.

00:22:59

But yeah, it's just kind of interesting
that they are going

00:23:02

the flexible route
hybrid and electric same vehicle platform.

00:23:06

It's kind of happening
for the first time on this. Yes.

00:23:08

The rest of the driving experience

00:23:09

I think is is interesting
from a handling perspective.

00:23:12

I had some issues with it a little bit.

00:23:15

I'm not sure what you you both felt about
the handling, steering, things like that.

00:23:19

You loved it, I really did.

00:23:21

I like it, should I have no no I, I did I
yeah I just found it really comfortable.

00:23:28

I thought it handled
well for like what I needed. Yeah.

00:23:31

It's pretty easy to drive right.

00:23:32

I mean, yeah, well, we're steering effort.

00:23:34

I think it in that way fits the bill.

00:23:36

Yeah, right.

00:23:36

And, I don't know,

00:23:37

maybe that's just the thing in general
that I typically like about Toyota

00:23:41

and Lexus vehicles.

00:23:42

It's like the,
the steering isn't really heavy

00:23:44

because that tends to be, kind of a
like a literal pain point for me.

00:23:49

Yeah. I vehicles,
I have tendonitis in my wrists.

00:23:52

And so a heavy steering
just means that at the end of the trip,

00:23:55

I am going to be in pain
and it's not going to be enjoyable.

00:23:59

So worth it. Yeah.

00:24:00

So I found it to be really comfortable
because it was light enough.

00:24:04

It was what I needed.

00:24:05

It wasn't so much where I'm just like,
okay,

00:24:07

we're just flopping all over the place,
but right, right, right.

00:24:10

But it was
it was kind of a sweet spot for me.

00:24:11

So I did find it very comfortable.

00:24:13

And overall
just my body felt good afterwards,

00:24:15

which is okay when I hear that. Yeah,
yeah for sure.

00:24:18

I think it's definitely a Lexus
knowing the audience of the vehicle

00:24:22

because the complaints when I, you know,

00:24:24

when I talked to all the folks
who'd been in the car.

00:24:26

So again, I really enjoyed it.

00:24:28

I noticed some, you know, that

00:24:30

it was definitely it was interesting
because some aspects of it,

00:24:34

it felt a little bit,
a little confused around the edges.

00:24:39

Yeah. In terms. Okay.

00:24:40

But if you were to drive it
like a performance car,

00:24:43

you would get some really fun.

00:24:46

Yeah. Folks
who I spoke with. Yeah. Who drove it.

00:24:48

There was mixed reviews in the logbook.
Yeah.

00:24:51

I mean, it's it's very much
set up to be comfort.

00:24:54

Yes. Oriented like we talked about. Right.

00:24:55

So yeah, you start hustling it or driving
it really quickly

00:24:58

and yeah, you're going to notice
high rates of body roll

00:25:00

and it doesn't necessarily
feel engaging and sporty.

00:25:03

My I guess less of an issue with that
because that's just not what the car is

00:25:07

trying to do.

00:25:09

But they put

00:25:10

in the steering is light, like you
said, Emily, but it's also very quick.

00:25:13

So like the ratio is quick.

00:25:14

So it felt like it was almost too easy
to put in very much effort.

00:25:18

Yeah. Like too much steering.

00:25:20

Like a little a little on the twitchy
or a little on the twitchy

00:25:23

or I expect with something
with some more resistance.

00:25:26

Correct. Yeah.
So it just made it like on the highway.

00:25:29

It could have been a little bit more of a
relaxed experience for me if it was able

00:25:33

to just not focus
so much on the inputs for so Town Car,

00:25:37

you just go maybe,
maybe the executive version.

00:25:40

Yeah. Maybe they slow down
in the executive actually. Yes.

00:25:42

And you know, you sit in the back.

00:25:45

You're right, you're right.
Why would I drive?

00:25:46

We all need a couple of promotions. Yeah.
And then we get there and then we

00:25:50

driven around the estate.

00:25:51

It'll be great. Right?

00:25:52

The other thing

00:25:53

I want to mention quick, before we move on
is the lack of one pedal driving.

00:25:57

And I know that's, maybe.

00:25:59

Fine. Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:26:01

Okay. I'll let you.

00:26:03

I think it's interesting
that they don't even have it as an option.

00:26:06

Right.

00:26:06

Like,
yeah, make it able to be turned off 110%.

00:26:09

You don't want to force somebody
to use it.

00:26:11

Some of the better EVs at this point.

00:26:13

They just make it easy to turn on
or turn off.

00:26:15

Yeah.

00:26:15

Tesla, Rivian, those they just force
you into it all the time.

00:26:19

But, they don't have it at all.

00:26:20

So you can change the region
using the paddles and things like that,

00:26:23

but it'll never bring you,
to a complete stop.

00:26:26

Yeah, but but maybe to your point, Keith,
this is where they know their audience.

00:26:31

You know, maybe the demographic
that's buying this doesn't want.

00:26:35

Yeah,
they want the more traditional. Yeah.

00:26:37

You know, the one pedal drive.

00:26:38

I personally don't love one pedal drive.

00:26:40

I think one of the things I liked

00:26:41

most about this car experience was that
it didn't feel like an EV to me.

00:26:45

Yeah, yeah.

00:26:46

You know, minus the quietness
and like the isolation part.

00:26:49

But I was like, oh great, I have time.

00:26:51

Forgot that I was driving on TV.
Yeah, right.

00:26:53

Except for when I looked at the range.

00:26:56

So. And how quick it was.

00:26:57

Yeah.

00:26:58

It's quick.

00:26:58

It's very it's not like pin
you to your seat.

00:27:01

Quick. Right, right. It's quick.

00:27:03

The the front wheel drive one
we borrowed was less quick.

00:27:06

Less quick for sure.

00:27:08

So that is you're going to want
the dual motor if you want to.

00:27:11

Yeah.

00:27:11

Yeah yeah.

00:27:12

So I guess the point is
is like if you're looking for

00:27:14

maybe you're already in an EV,
you're in a model three

00:27:16

going into something like this, you

00:27:18

it's going to be different
than what you're used to.

00:27:20

Your first EV probably won't care so much.

00:27:22

We keep kind of reiterating, though,
that this is an EV that is tuned

00:27:27

for comfort
100% for a luxury, not performance.

00:27:31

So if you're coming from
something like a Tesla or a Rivian, where

00:27:36

like you want that performance aspect,
this is probably not the car for you.

00:27:40

Yeah, absolutely.

00:27:41

I think you just kind of have to bucket
them.

00:27:43

Not all EVs are the same. Right.

00:27:45

And you just need to understand
that nuance here for sure.

00:27:48

There's some point.

00:27:49

There's a lot of like
look what we can do with EVs.

00:27:52

And usually that's about kind of dumb

00:27:55

things or things that are no great things,
or it's showing off

00:27:59

because you have more power to use
for more features.

00:28:02

So you, you put, you know,
but I think what Lexus said was, look,

00:28:06

look at how the look, what we can do
is to look at how quiet it can be.

00:28:09

Yeah. I love it for that. Yeah, yeah.

00:28:12

And that's great.

00:28:12

By the way, did you use the paddles at all
for the, for the,

00:28:15

the region to change the region?

00:28:16

Because I love that. No,
I didn't this time.

00:28:19

I have in the past,
but I, I was comfortable where I was,

00:28:23

I was like, I just,
I like to get in and drive it.

00:28:26

Yeah. Yes.
Basically I really did. Yeah. Yeah.

00:28:28

And that's good.

00:28:29

I know
we haven't gotten outside the car yet,

00:28:31

but the getting in was so satisfying
for me because I could open the door.

00:28:36

Oh yes.

00:28:37

Because the door handles didn't have to,
you know, do a whole song and dance before

00:28:41

part of the look what we can
do. Right? Right.

00:28:43

Yes, yes.

00:28:44

I got to the car
and I didn't have to think extra hard

00:28:48

about how to open the door
and say any magical chance to

00:28:52

for the car to release itself to me.

00:28:54

So I was very excited. It's
a very low bar.

00:28:57

I fully accept that,
except that it's not even that

00:29:00

fully normal door handle, but
I didn't have to wait for it to pop out.

00:29:04

I didn't have to stay open Sesame
like it was great for me.

00:29:07

I was like, yes, there's like, there's an
electronic kind of pad underneath.

00:29:11

It's like,
BMW does have something similar.

00:29:13

It's it's electronic, but it's it's hidden
and it's always available.

00:29:18

Right? Yeah.

00:29:18

And there's also this kind of weird thing.

00:29:20

And I went through the owner's manual
about this.

00:29:22

So if the battery dies,
there is a way to get into the car.

00:29:26

You have to pull this,
this sort of cover back

00:29:29

and take, key out of the,
out of the keyfob. Yes.

00:29:33

There's a traditional keyfob
that you get with a car,

00:29:36

not a, you know, Thank you, thank you.

00:29:39

Yes, but it it isn't something
that like, say, you know, God forbid

00:29:44

something is is wrong and a firefighter
needs to get in in a flash.

00:29:48

Yeah.

00:29:48

This is more of,
the battery's dead, and it's.

00:29:51

I'm. I'm parked somewhere, and
I have to get into the vehicle to tow it.

00:29:55

Right.

00:29:55

It's a little more involved
because at least it's there.

00:29:58

At least it's to the bar.

00:30:00

Yeah, it's,
you know, taking what we can get.

00:30:03

Yeah. I do appreciate it.

00:30:04

They, they've since these door
handle types first showed up on like the

00:30:08

and some of the the
maybe there was always this little delay.

00:30:11

So you would pull that pad
that you're talking about

00:30:13

and then I mean the shape was different
but you pull it and then like the door.

00:30:16

Yeah. And then, then it would release.

00:30:17

It was always this
like kind of two stage thing.

00:30:19

They seem to have made it quicker.

00:30:21

So you just pull it and it opens, right?

00:30:23

Yeah.

00:30:23

Again the bar is low, the door opens
when you pull, the door opens.

00:30:28

They move.

00:30:28

Yeah.

00:30:29

So anyway, so the the s, I'm
pretty interested to see how it'll test

00:30:33

when it goes through the full program.
Right. The last one scored really well.

00:30:36

So we'll see kind of how this one does.

00:30:38

So definitely check that out.

00:30:40

As it moves through the process,
not to be remiss as a safety person

00:30:44

to say that it does come

00:30:45

standard, equipped with all the key
safety features that we like to see.

00:30:49

You happier, automatic emergency
braking with pedestrian detection

00:30:53

and higher risk cable, blind spot
warning, rear cross traffic warning.

00:30:56

It's got their whole,
you know, safety state of things.

00:31:00

And the latest version,
I think it was like plus 4.0.

00:31:04

And I was like, oh snap, double deal.

00:31:05

It has it has the rear seat safety
features that I like to see as well.

00:31:09

Belt minders.

00:31:10

And if trip reminder, those outboard
seating positions have advanced seatbelt

00:31:14

technology, sorry, torso airbags.

00:31:16

So you get a lot of bang for your buck

00:31:18

when it comes to safety,
which I'm always really happy to see.

00:31:21

Do you wish that they had
put that surround view camera?

00:31:23

Because that's always helpful to have,
but overall very pleased.

00:31:26

Yeah, it's interesting
you say bang for your buck

00:31:29

because that was kind of where I was
thinking with this car and not to say

00:31:32

that $54 is inexpensive by any means,

00:31:35

but just thinking about

00:31:36

what you're getting for the money
in terms of that luxurious experience

00:31:39

and the EV nature of it
and the safety equipment, somehow in 2026,

00:31:44

it felt like a pretty good value
at $54.

00:31:47

Until you remember that
the last generation, this one starts at

00:31:50

just under 50.

00:31:51

The last generation started at
just under 44.

00:31:54

Yeah,
that's a huge difference. That number.

00:31:56

So this vehicle's made in the, in Fukuoka
plant in in Japan.

00:32:01

And I just saw a study that came across
about the average cost of,

00:32:06

what tariffs have added to new vehicles,
is, is on average

00:32:11

and it depends on the country,
but it's in the thousands.

00:32:14

And we look at that
we look at other costs rising.

00:32:17

We look at and and we see cheese.

00:32:19

This is this is a lot.

00:32:21

You know

00:32:22

if there's it has to be cost cutting on
I mean it's cost cutting on everything.

00:32:25

Yeah sure.

00:32:25

But cost cutting on a $54 vehicle
and you're moving up an income bracket

00:32:31

when you're going from 40,
you know, 44, 44, 45 to 50.

00:32:37

Yeah.

00:32:38

But yeah, it's for 54.

00:32:41

It's it's it's, it's a luxury car
that if you can afford it, it's,

00:32:45

you don't have to feel guilty,
I don't think. Right, right.

00:32:48

And at least the cost cutting didn't
come at the cost of safety.

00:32:52

Yes. Quietness of like that experience.

00:32:56

Now, removal
of all controls on the inside.

00:32:58

Yes, yes, yes. So.

00:33:00

But we'll see where the hybrid lands too.

00:33:02

Right. We'll test that too.

00:33:03

And this is kind of lagging a little bit
in terms of being available.

00:33:06

But we'll get one of those also.
And it's actually a little more expensive.

00:33:08

The hybrid interestingly
yes is than the base EV right.

00:33:12

So that's interesting.
Not the normal trend.

00:33:15

Yeah. Yeah.

00:33:17

All right.

00:33:17

Why don't we move on
to audience questions.

00:33:20

And just a reminder, send your questions
to talking cars at icloud.com

00:33:25

and we will send you some swag
if we use your question on the show.

00:33:28

Which is pretty awesome.

00:33:29

So you're wearing some of the
I am wearing some of the swag.

00:33:32

Is that on purpose?
Are you modeling it for. That's right.

00:33:34

Audience. It's not my.

00:33:36

Yes that's right.
It'll be a t shirt or something else.

00:33:38

I actually didn't get this at work.
You had to send in a question.

00:33:41

This is my question
I got to send. Yeah. Okay.

00:33:44

That's good. Yeah.

00:33:45

Okay.

00:33:46

So John from Palmer Lake, Colorado,

00:33:50

he says for my 2025 Volvo Xc60, T8,

00:33:54

gv Volvo recommends
a 10 mile oil change interval.

00:33:59

If half the miles I put on
the X 60 are in pure

00:34:02

electric mode,
would the 10 mile oil change interval

00:34:06

effectively be a 20
mile interval on the gas engine?

00:34:10

Do the math first.

00:34:11

Do the math. Yeah, essentially.

00:34:13

Can I stretch my oil change
on my plug in hybrid if I do?

00:34:17

A lot of my driving in electric
mode is what this this person's asking.

00:34:20

Totally. See where they're coming from.

00:34:22

That is a logical thought
process in question.

00:34:26

And also asking is it is the gas
engine waiting too long for.

00:34:31

Because if he's only doing it

00:34:32

every 10 miles, could that be wait,
no, I did the math backwards.

00:34:36

Yeah,

00:34:38

well, I mean, to your point was why
you're an engineer and I'm a writer, but.

00:34:41

Yes, yes. Let's see.
I haven't answered the question.

00:34:43

Yes. 10
miles can seem like a long time.

00:34:47

Also, depending on,

00:34:49

you know, the car you're coming from,
some of these oil change intervals

00:34:51

just in general are being stretched
further and further.

00:34:54

But, generally the answer to
this question is no.

00:34:58

So, first of all, with any car
and this Volvo Xc60

00:35:03

as well,
the oil change interval is not, random.

00:35:06

They are choosing this for a reason.

00:35:08

And it's not the same in the RV
as it is in the regular Volvo.

00:35:12

XY 60.

00:35:14

So they,

00:35:15

you know, the systems in the car,
the engines designed differently

00:35:17

for a plug
in hybrid application than otherwise.

00:35:20

So this 10 mile recommendation
that they have is specific to your car.

00:35:24

So I would follow it.

00:35:25

General rule of thumb, but, the reason
I wouldn't go longer is because oil ages.

00:35:30

Also, mileage is one thing, but,
the kind of rule of thumb

00:35:34

and I talked to my crossing about
this is about a year, right?

00:35:36

That's why they put a date
on the little sticker in addition to a.

00:35:39

Not exactly. It's just like tires, right?

00:35:41

You can whichever comes first.
Yeah, exactly.

00:35:43

You can age your tires by putting

00:35:45

a certain amount of miles on them,

00:35:46

or they can just get old
and then they need replacing.

00:35:48

And the same really goes for oil too.

00:35:49

So, about a year and then just thinking
about plug in hybrids specifically,

00:35:53

they're, they're environment if you will,
or use cases a little bit different.

00:35:58

Right.

00:35:58

You're a lot of the times
if you are driving around in electric

00:36:02

only mode, the way
a lot of these plug in hybrids work is

00:36:05

when you need the full power of the system
and you stomp on the accelerator pedal.

00:36:08

That engine kind of wakes up
and adds itself to the situation.

00:36:12

So it can go from being pretty cold
to being on and revving really high

00:36:17

all of a sudden. Right?

00:36:18

Which is a stressful situations
designed for it.

00:36:20

But that can place,

00:36:22

you know, the oil under a certain
situation then, maybe otherwise.

00:36:26

So, oil changes, generally speaking.

00:36:29

Not really the place to skimp.

00:36:30

So I would follow your recommendation.

00:36:33

And especially the one specifically
for your vehicle.

00:36:36

Right.

00:36:36

The recommendation

00:36:37

that's there in your manual is specific
to the powertrain that you have.

00:36:41

It's not it's not like
a blanket recommendation for all Volvos.

00:36:45

Sure. So yeah, I think it's important.

00:36:48

This is a place to trust
on the manufacturer recommendation.

00:36:51

Yeah.

00:36:51

And and not a place to
I mean, I'm not saying

00:36:54

oil changes are inexpensive these days,
especially on a premium vehicle,

00:36:58

but, in the grand scheme of things,
you don't want to cause damage.

00:37:01

Derringer,
because you try to stretch your oil

00:37:03

or oil, stretch your gas tank
instead by driving more efficiently.

00:37:07

All right.

00:37:07

So that is going to do it for our show.

00:37:10

You'll notice on our Talking Cars
YouTube channel page

00:37:14

that we have a donation, area set up
so you can, donate to the show.

00:37:19

You'll notice as you're watching this
or you're watching other shows,

00:37:22

you didn't see any ads.

00:37:23

We are nonprofit, and so your donations
really help us kind of keep doing what

00:37:26

we're doing.

00:37:27

And, and hopefully
providing the information that helps you.

00:37:30

So anything helps.

00:37:32

So, yeah, definitely
check out that donation button and, we

00:37:35

will see you next time.
